Koi - Nishikigoi Koi are a variety of carp that are bred for form and color. The wild carp has long been a symbol for Asian countries and can be seen in their pottery, paintings, and carvings. There is much speculation regarding the colored koi - nishikigoi, but most authorities believe that the koi we know today came from Japan. It is believed that the first colored koi was red. Breeding of the red and white koi created the first mutation of the two-colored red and white koi. Some koi are bred to be very hardy and live long lives. The oldest living koi was believed to have lived more than 200 years. Koi are bred all over the world and considered to be the most popular fresh-water ornamental pond fish.
